What is Writing Space?
- Writing Space is a high-quality education platform designed to deliver expert instruction in reading and writing.
Who can attend?
- Learners who are motivated to learn; in other words, learners who know they have some weaknesses in critical skills like writing that they want to address.
- Initially:
- Only students who have been invited by friends and family can attend.
- 4th graders
- In-person
- Price: $200/4 sessions/1.25 hours per session
- 5/6th graders
- The transition to middle school can be tough, especially if learners have a weak foundation in reading and writing. In my experience as a critical reading and writing instructor, these are the grades in which you want to really have your learner be exposed to complicated thoughts, ideas, and perspectives through well-organized text. Learners can then mimic what they are reading (input) and produce writing (output) that is of similar quality in terms of thought and clarity.
- In-person
- Price: $200/4 sessions/1.25 hours per session
What is the primary learning outcome by having my learner take reading and writing classes at Writing Space?
- Learning outcome:
- Learn the fundamentals of essay writing, which includes a sound understanding of essay structure.
- How is this class different from other writing classes?
- Expert instruction.
- David Kim has taught critical reading and writing to thousands of students in both Asia and the US for over 15 years.
- Unique pedagogy.
- David believes that the art of essay writing is as much science as it is art. For example, many students in schools do not know how to approach essay writing with a deep understanding of the fundamental components of an essay. When students are asked to write supporting details, they often are unaware that there are three major types of supporting details: (1) facts, (2) logic, and (3) expert opinion.
- David believes students can significantly improve their essay writing with a comprehensive and deep understanding of the fundamental units of essay structure.
I heard that there is one course that is free. Is this true?
Yes. The Fundamental of Essay writing is a free course that I teach online. It is specifically designed for students (5th grade and up) who are weak at writing essays.
Why free?
- Fundamental education should be free — for anyone who wants to learn.
- We’ll figure out a way to measure every learner’s improvement; then, we’ll present these metrics to donors who care about education. Donors like knowing their donations are used to make a real (and measurable) impact.
- I hope we can teach one million learners for free.
- I hope donors donate to our platform.
- I hope we can use some of those funds to expand Writing Space (both online and offline).
- By the way, free doesn’t mean inferior education. All of our instructors will be on the platform because they want to make an impact on the future generation of learners.
